KSDS Trainer Position Description

Mission: To follow the job responsibilities to the highest degree of ethics and integrity to achieve the
KSDS Assistance Dogs, Inc. mission of providing professionally trained guide, service, and facility dogs
for people in need of a canine partner to enhance their independence, to fully function in society, and/or
to enrich their professional career responsibilities with the ongoing support of our trainers to ensure
proficient working partnerships.

Supervision: Reports to the CEO who reports to the Board of Directors

General Job Responsibilities:
• Trainer will work with dogs in any of the three assistance dog programs at KSDS Assistance Dogs, Inc.
(guide, service, facility) to meet or exceed the ADI guidelines set forth for a successful team placement
• Provide leadership in the evaluation and training of dogs
• Maintain a strong working relationship with various facilities who allow dogs to train in their building(s)
• Screen and select potential students by reviewing files, interviewing clients, setting up class dates,
etc.…Organize, instruct, and certify client/dog team placement classes
• Continually follow up with graduates and file paperwork accordingly
• Maintain accurate and confidential training records which enhance the standards and guidelines of
KSDS Assistance Dogs, Inc. and Assistance Dogs International
• Order, organize, and care for training materials/tools
• Maintain a clean and safe environment for training at KSDS Assistance Dogs, Inc.’s property by
assisting in CHU cleaning and dog care chores, as needed
• Assist with organizational programs and events such as Graduate Retreat, Pups Days, tours,
demonstrations, and informational programs for the public
• Manage the training of dogs placed in Topeka Correctional Facility’s “Pooches and Pals” program
• Assist with transporting dogs to and from Topeka Correctional Facility in Topeka, Kansas, as needed
• Be willing to travel on approved outings
• Participate in required continuing education (CE) programs approved by the KSDS Assistance Dogs,
Inc. Board of Directors, and/or the CEO
• Provide guidance and instruction to apprentice training staff (if applicable)
• Sign a “Do Not Compete” statement with KSDS Assistance Dogs, Inc.
• Provide quality service to KSDS Assistance Dogs, Inc.’s students and their families
• Agree to maintain a continuing commitment to confidentiality, courtesy, and professionalism

Qualifications and Experience:
• College Degree preferred, or equivalent work experience
• Completion of KSDS Assistance Dogs, Inc.’s in-house certification of knowledge and ability.
o Proof of similar qualifications from another ADI accredited assistance dog training school
may be accepted
• Knowledge of animal husbandry
• Must have a valid driver’s license

Essential Physical Demands:
• Able to lift at least 50 pounds
• Able to drive during the day and night
• Able to handle large dogs (60 to 90 pounds)
• Able to walk long distances
• Requires bending, stooping, climbing, reaching, walking, crawling, and working in extreme weather
conditions
• Maintain general good health to be able to handle physical requirements of the job

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Knowledge of assistance dog laws, rights, access rights, and related information
• Applicable knowledge of canine behavior, training techniques, and disabilities
• Excellent communication, organizational, and record-keeping skills

Job Specifications:
• This position is a full-time position, work location is the West Training Building
• The time commitment is from 8 AM to 5 PM Monday through Friday. Compensatory time is available.

KSDS Apprentice Trainer Position Description

to enrich their professional career responsibilities with the ongoing support of our trainers to ensure
proficient working partnerships.

Supervision: Reports to the CEO who reports to the Board of Directors

General Job Responsibilities:
• Apprentice trainer will be working in all areas of the assistance dogs programs at KSDS Assistance
Dogs, Inc., including, but not limited to guide, service, and facility in order to meet and/or exceed the
guidelines set forth by Assistance Dogs International (ADI)
• Must demonstrate the ability to take direction from supervisors/instructors and complete all tasks given
• Maintain a clean and safe environment for training at KSDS Assistance Dogs, Inc. property, including
assisting in CHU cleaning and dog care chores
• Learn and accept responsibilities for general animal husbandry, including, but not limited to, basic dog
care, obedience training, and understanding of canine behaviors
• Remain current and up-to-date on training and disability issues
• Assist with organizational programs and events such as Graduate Retreat, Pups Days, tours,
demonstrations, and informational programs for the public
• Be willing to travel on approved outings
• Participate in required continuing education (CE) programs approved by the KSDS Assistance Dogs,
Inc. Board of Directors, and/or the CEO
• Sign a “Do Not Compete” statement with KSDS Assistance Dogs, Inc.

Progression of Job Responsibilities:
• Train with dogs, daily, on basic skills, social manners, and commands. Maintain daily training records.
• Become familiar with Behavioral Check Lists and how a dog is reacting to various situations. Develop
an understanding of dog body language.
• Begin to add advanced commands that are targeted toward a specific training area.
• Assist with determining what programs an individual dog goes into.
• Review client videos to help decide where each dog should be placed and conduct interviews with
potential partners.
• Take responsibility for training one dog from the beginning of advanced training through the end of
advanced training and assist with class for each area.
• Know the requirements imposed by Assistance Dogs International regarding training, record keeping,
and reporting.
• Maintain accurate and confidential training records which enhance the standards and guidelines of
KSDS Assistance Dogs, Inc. and Assistance Dogs International.
