Service Dog Program

Service dogs are specially trained to assist individuals with physical disabilities—ranging from those who use wheelchairs for mobility to those who need a steady, four-legged partner for balance while walking.

These dogs are trained to perform a wide variety of tasks, including:

• Retrieving dropped or selected items

• Assisting with dressing

• Pulling wheelchairs

• Bracing for balance or transfers

• Turning lights on and off

• Opening and closing doors

Important Note

We do not train dogs for:
Autism, Alzheimer’s, cognitive challenges, diabetes, hearing loss, emotional support, PTSD, or seizure alert.

Who Can Apply?

Applicants must be at least 14 years old to receive a service dog.

Training at KSDS

Recipients attend a two-week team training at the KSDS campus in Washington, Kansas, where they’ll learn to work with their dog in real-life scenarios.
Room and board are provided during this time.
