Guide Dog Program

Guide dogs offer life-changing mobility and independence for individuals who are blind or visually impaired. Through specialized training, these dogs can:

  • Navigate sidewalks and avoid obstacles (including overhead hazards)

  • Locate curbs, stairs, and doors

  • Assist with safe street crossings

  • Respond to directional commands like “left” and “right”

  • Help find objects such as chairs, counters, elevators, and escalators

Who Can Apply?

To be eligible for a guide dog, applicants must be at least 14 years old and declared legally blind by optometrist or ophthalmologist.

Training at KSDS

All guide dog recipients attend a two-week team training program on our campus in Washington, Kansas. During this time, you’ll learn how to work with your new dog in a variety of real-world settings.

Room and board are provided at no cost during the training.
